What a good Read??

Sitting in a Facutly meeting I am scanning the books in our library some are facing you to maybe intice you to pick up the book.. I saw this one from a distance and when the meeting was over it did suck me in with this lovely cover~ Do you think a 1-5 grader would be interested to read this?

Hmmmm~ A horse is a horse?

so we were doing an easy drawing assignment.. See if you can tell what it is :) Now this student never does work and complains so who was I to stop her when she actually did something even if its teeth when all the way up the nose?

In my class, I have a featured artist of the week. My students bring me art from home that they work on. Well I had a second grader today come in and tell me he wanted to be the featured artist just like his best friend. So he lays down this paper and lays the paper clip next to it. "Isn't this a masterpiece, it looks just like my drawing." I then asked him how long it took him, he said only a couple of seconds.

Buck Teeth of Course

3rd Graders are working on their half human/ half animal faces this week. Around the border the students add objects or patterns that go along with their animals. This sweet third grader decided to do himself with a rabbit. When finished I asked what object he placed in the bottom right of his border. He replied, "Rabbit Buck Teeth of Course." :) I couldn't disagree that that was an object related to rabbits I guess.

Self Portrait

These self-portraits were done by 2nd graders. We were learning about Picasso's Blue period. This picture was ruined when he painted it. Thank goodness I got a picture of the sketch first. Enjoy!! Note the floating hair scribble :)

This one is from Melissa

So as an art teacher I email all my other art teachers usually just to get ideas or just to chat.. Towards the end of the year I get an email from Melissa who taught elementary art in Troy. She had a wonderful Idea to have the 1st graders draw a picture for the elederly in the nursing home. She said this sweet little boy worked all period on this beautiful rainbow and even outlined it. As they were cleaning write at the end he wrote this sweet little message at the top " Your time is up. " Now this is funny because he honestly wasn't doing it to be mean, he just doesn't know any better :)

Teaching Elementary Art

Hello Blog!! So I have decided to create a blog based on my life teaching elementary. Hopefully this will help me to remember the hilarious comments that I hear daily from my sweet students! Maybe I have a weird sense of humor but hopefully these will make someone laugh as hard as I do some days. I would like to start with a comment made the first year I started from a first grader.

While waiting in line to leave art I have this artwork American Gothic by Grant Wood posted by my door. Many kids think it is scary and one day a first grader with his innocent face looked up at me and said, " Ms. Chinberg who is that? Are they like the first two people on earth or something?" I will never forget it.
